NATHAN YONG

Nathan Yong laureato Temasek Politecnico con un diploma in Industrial Design nel 1991. Ha iniziato la sua carriera non come progettista, ma come tecnico nello sviluppo prodotto per diverse aziende in Singapore. Ha viaggiato in vari paesi tra cui India, Vietnam, Thailandia e Indonesia alla ricerca di produttori e artigiani di qualità per sviluppare e produrre mobili e accessori per la casa. Attraverso questa esperienza, ha imparato diverse tecniche di produzione. Nel 1999, nasce il suo primo negozio al dettaglio chiamato Air Division, dove vende le proprie creazioni realizzate da artigiani asiatici. Air Division rapidamente cresce riscuotendo successo commerciale sia in Singapore che oltremare. Nathan successivamente vende Divisione Air e persegue un master presso la University of New South Wales, in Australia, dove successivamente si laurea con lode in Master di Design. Per due anni consecutivi (2006 e 2007), Nathan vince il prestigioso Dot Concept Design Award Rosso con suoi progetti. Successivamente, nel 2008, Nathan ha riceve il prestigioso Design Award del Presidente Singapore; Designer of the Year, la più alta onorificenza concessa ai progettisti di tutte le discipline creative a Singapore. Il suo lavoro è ispirato da semplici ricordi visivi di vita quotidiana. Nei suoi progetti elimina i dettagli superflui, coglie la poesia attraverso una ricerca rigorosa, creando con stile fresco e funzionale prodotti da subito ben riconoscibili. Nel King size International 2011, INTERNI per il Salone del Mobile, Nathan Yong è stato selezionato come i più promettenti Giovani Designer della scena internazionale. Egli dice: “Mi piace evocare tramite i miei progetti un senso di meraviglia e portando un sorriso a coloro che li osservano e li usano. La maggior parte dei miei progetti iniziano con una operazione di stripping, per la necessità di rendere la funzione, il materiale, il metodo e il risultato, come comprensibile possibile, mantenendo la sua autenticità il loro obiettivo. “, Spiegando le sue opere sono come” ingegneria silenziosa ” , dice “E ‘ciò che permette al modulo di esprimersi, sulla base di considerazioni tecniche, non solo come uno schema grafico.” Attualmente con sede a Singapore, Nathan gestisce consulenza di progettazione multidisciplinare. Ha anche apparire in riviste internazionali come Wallpaper, Monocle, Superficie, Dwell, In Ufficio, Habitus ecc I suoi clienti includono Design Within Reach (USA), Ligne Roset (Francia), Living Divani (Italia), Opinion Ciatti (Italia), Sphaus (Italia), Mogg (Italia), Domicil (Germania), Ethnicraft (Belgio), Grafunkt (Singapore), mobili FOLKS (Singapore) e molti altri. Nathan è stato anche nominato in una delle dal presidente di Singapore Design Award 2011 e 2012. E dal design della Singtel Trofeo F1 2012.

Nathan Yong graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in Industrial Design in 1991. He began his career not as a designer, but as a buyer as well as engaging in product development for various companies in Singapore. Through these jobs, he travelled to various countries including India, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia to source for quality manufacturers and craftsmen to develop and manufacture furniture and home accessories. Through this exposure, he learnt various production techniques and crafts. In 1999, Nathan started his first retail store called Air Division,, selling his own creations made by Asian craftsman. Air Division rapidly grew and claimed commercial success in both Singapore as well as the overseas market. Nathan subsequently sold Air Division and pursued a Master degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia, which he subsequently graduated with distinction in Master of Design. For two consecutive years (in 2006 & 2007), Nathan won the prestigious Red Dot Concept Design Award with his conceptual designs of a mass production coffin and a portable room heater. Subsequently in 2008, Nathan received the prestigious Singapore President’s Design Award; Designer of the Year, the highest honor accorded to designers from all creative disciplines in Singapore. His work is inspired by simple visual memories from everyday life, but pared down with the lightness of restraints. Instead of superfluous details, he captures the poetry of products through rigorous research and engineering, creating fresh styles and functions that fit effortlessly into the user’s life. In the 2011 International King size supplement, INTERNI for Salone del Mobile, Nathan Yong was selected as the most promising Young Designers on the international scene. He says “I like my design to evoke a sense of wonder and bring a smile to those who observe and use them, conveying the idea that lies behind their creation. Like the Pebble Tables, based on the image of stones, concave and convex, formed and shaped by the water current of rivers over time. Most of my projects start with an operation of stripping, due to the need to make the function, the material, the method and the result as comprehensible as possible, retaining its authenticity of its objective.” Explaining his works are like “silent engineering”, he says “It is what allows the form to express itself, based on technical considerations, not just as a graphic scheme.” Currently based in Singapore, Nathan runs a multidisciplinary design consultancy practice. His work spans across industrial design, graphics, interior design, architectural design, strategic planning in product development and manufacturing processes as well as branding. Nathan’s work has been exhibited globally in various cosmopolitans such as Singapore, Shizuoka, Milan, London, Koln and Taipei. He has also appear in International magazines like Wallpaper, Monocle, Surface, Dwell, On Office, Habitus etc. His clients include Design Within Reach (USA), Ligne Roset (France), Living Divani (Italy), Opinion Ciatti (Italy), Sphaus (Italy), Mogg (Italy), Domicil (Germany), Ethnicraft (Belgium), Grafunkt (Singapore), FOLKS furniture (Singapore) and many others. Nathan was also appointed as one of the juries for Singapore President Design Award 2011 and 2012. And have design the coming Singtel 2012 F1 Trophy.
